Be part of the breakthrough that could stop MS in its tracks.

Imagine keeping a secret for 13 years.

A secret that stole the best parts of your life. Your confidence. Your independence. Your peace of mind. This was what happened to Emma.

Emma was diagnosed with MS at just 12 years old.

“I didn't tell anyone,” she remembers, “not even my friends. I deleted all the emails, got rid of every bit of information I was given and completely blocked it out.”

Emma even began skipping medication. She tried to convince herself her MS wasn’t real.

By 25, she could no longer hide the truth.

By 25, she was in and out of hospital, undergoing gruelling treatments every other day, struggling to walk, and facing a reality she could no longer ignore.

Emma finally realised the weight she had been carrying for so many years.

MS had already stolen so much of her life.

Emma's MS has progressed. Now 36, she uses a walking stick to get around. She doesn't know what her future at 40 will look like, let alone 80.

About the Research - Stopping MS Progression

Dr. Jessica Fletcher, Senior Research Fellow at the Menzies Institute for Medical Research is working to answer one of the biggest mysteries of MS – why the body stops repairing itself.

The nervous system of people with MS cannot stop deteriorating because their body loses its ability to repair myelin – the protective coating around nerves.
accessible
When myelin isn’t repaired, nerves are damaged and eventually lost. This leads to increased disability and a loss of independence. We still don’t know why it happens.
healing
Dr Fletcher is trying to restart the body’s repair process, by understanding why myelin-producing cells stop working – and how to get them going again.

The results of this research could lead to treatments that slow, or even stop the progression of MS. This would change the lives of everyone living with MS.

For people like Emma, this research could mean everything. But these breakthroughs are only be made possible through the generous support of people like you.

“Without donor funding,” says Dr. Fletcher, “none of this would be possible.”

With your help , we can accelerate breakthroughs that bring us closer to a future where people like Emma can live a life without uncertainty, and where MS no longer steals life’s best moments. Can we count on you?
